Stop paying for colours you never use
Every watercolourist ends up with the same drawer: three half-finished ready-made sets, a dozen pans that have never been touched, and the two colours you actually live by scraped down to the plastic. The ROSA Gallery Empty Watercolour Tin in red is the fix. It is a professional-grade metal palette case, made in Ukraine, that arrives empty and waiting — you fill it with your own full pans or half pans, in your own order, in your own colour logic.
Two sizes. The 21 full pan case is a genuinely pocketable travel palette that still gives you a serious working range. The 35 full pan case is a studio-grade palette that folds down small enough to live in a rucksack. Both come in a deep, saturated red — a finish you will not find on the standard turquoise and indigo tins stocked by most UK art shops.
Specification
- 21 full pan case: 22 × 7 × 2.3 cm, approx. 210 g. Holds 21 full pans or up to 42 half pans.
- 35 full pan case: 22.5 × 11 × 2.8 cm, approx. 320 g. Holds 35 full pans or up to 70 half pans.
- Material: enamelled metal, red exterior, soft off-white interior.
- Additional third row of fastenings — this is what lets a case the same footprint as an older 14-pan tin carry 21 colours, and a 28-pan footprint carry 35.
- Secure central catch: pans clip firmly into the middle of the case and stay put even if the tin is turned upside down in a bag.
- Removable rows: detach a row to free up space for a brush, liner or pencil.
- Integrated mixing palette: both the fold-out tray and the inside of the lid work as mixing surfaces with deep wells.
- Thumb ring on the base for a steady one-handed grip while standing and painting.
- Fits full pans and half pans, including pans from other manufacturers.
- Supplied empty. Pans and paint are not included.
The detail most artists only notice outdoors
The interior is deliberately not brilliant white. ROSA specifies an off-white with no added shade, because a snow-white enamel throws glare back at you in direct sunlight and quietly shifts how you read every wash you mix. On an overcast day you would never notice. On a bright afternoon on the coast, it is the difference between colours that look right in the tin and colours that look right on the paper.
Why ROSA Gallery
ROSA is a Ukrainian manufacturer with more than 25 years in professional art materials, developing its range in direct collaboration with working artists. The cases carry the same engineering thinking as the paints: the catch system, the removable rows and the finger ring all exist because painters asked for them. Buying ROSA also means supporting Ukrainian manufacturing at a time when that matters.
Who this is for
- Plein air and travel painters — a metal tin that survives a rucksack and a thumb ring that survives a windy hillside.
- Artists building a custom palette — pour your own pans from tube colour, or mix pans across brands.
- Urban sketchers — the 21 pan case fits a coat pocket alongside a waterbrush.
- Studio painters with a wide range — 35 full pans covers a full botanical or landscape palette without a second tin.
- Anyone consolidating five half-used sets into one working palette.
A gift that gets opened and then actually used
Empty palette cases are the rare art gift that cannot be wrong. You are not guessing someone's colour taste, their pigment loyalties or their brand preference — you are giving them the case and letting them fill it. The red finish makes it feel like an object rather than a supply, and at this price it sits comfortably in the under-£20 and under-£30 gift brackets for birthdays, Christmas and art school starts.
Frequently asked questions
Does it come with paint or pans?
No. The case is supplied completely empty so you can choose your own colours. You will need full pans or half pans separately.
Will it fit pans from other brands?
Yes. The case is designed around ROSA full pans and half pans, but takes standard pans from most manufacturers. Note that non-ROSA pans occasionally vary by a millimetre or two, so a case may hold slightly fewer than its rated count.
Can I use half pans instead?
Yes — the 21 pan case takes up to 42 half pans and the 35 pan case up to 70. You can also mix full and half pans in the same case.
Do the pans fall out when it is closed and carried?
No. Pans lock into a central catch and hold firm even when the case is inverted.
Which size should I choose?
Choose 21 if the case is going in a pocket or a small sketch bag. Choose 35 if you work with a wide palette and want everything in one tin.
Choose your size and start building
Select 21 or 35 full pans above and add to basket. Both sizes are in limited stock in red — this colour is not carried by other UK stockists, and once a batch is gone it is gone.
