Every painter has five or six colours they burn through and twenty they use sparingly. Most sets ignore this and give you identical pans of everything — so you run out of Ultramarine while the Violet sits barely touched. The ROSA Gallery Classic 31 is built around that reality: 26 half pans for range, plus 5 full-size pans of the colours you actually reach for. It's the most complete palette in the Classic line, and it still slides into a jacket pocket.

What you get

  • 31 colours — the broadest Classic palette available, covering warm and cool primaries, a full earth range, greens and neutrals.
  • 26 half pans (1.6ml) + 5 full pans (2.5ml) — a mixed layout that gives you variety without wasting space on colours you rarely touch.
  • Turquoise metal case, size M, 22 × 7 × 2.3cm — slim, sturdy, and light enough that you stop noticing it in a bag.
  • Two mixing palettes in different configurations — a fold-out tray plus mixing wells built into the lid, so wet washes and detail mixes don't run into each other.
  • Finger lock in the base — hold the whole palette in one hand while standing. This is what turns a tin into a field kit.
  • Pans sit in a proper insert and stay put even if the case is turned over.

One quiet advantage of those five full pans: a wider pan means you can load a large brush from the side instead of jabbing it in tip-first. Over months, that's the difference between a brush that keeps its point and one that splays.

Why artists trust ROSA Gallery

ROSA is a leading Ukrainian manufacturer of fine art materials with more than 26 years in production. These watercolours were developed in direct collaboration with working professional artists — each colour is tested, adjusted on artists' feedback, and only then put into production. That process is the reason the palettes feel considered rather than assembled.

  • 100% natural gum arabic binder — excellent adhesion and even, predictable dispersion across the paper.
  • Finely ground natural and synthetic pigments for genuine purity and transparency in every wash.
  • High pigment concentration — the same pan gives you a pale, airy tint or a deep saturated passage, depending only on how much water you use.
  • Mostly single-pigment colours, which is what keeps two-colour mixes clean and bright instead of dulling to grey.
  • High lightfastness, tested colour by colour, so finished work holds up over years rather than fading in a frame.
  • Natural drying technology — the pans rewet instantly under a damp brush. No scrubbing, no waiting for the colour to release.

Who this set suits

Painters who want one palette for everything. Thirty-one colours is enough to handle landscape, botanical, portrait and urban subjects without swapping tins between projects.

Students and art college work. A broad, balanced palette at a sensible price, with proper artist-grade pigment rather than hobby paint that fights you.

Plein air and sketching. The M case is genuinely portable, the finger lock makes standing work possible, and the instant rewetting matters when the light is changing.

Illustrators. Consistent, repeatable colour straight from the pan, with the transparency needed for clean layering.

Anyone stepping up from a student set. If your colours keep turning muddy no matter how carefully you mix, the paint is usually the problem — not your technique.

How to use it

Touch a damp brush to the colour and lift the paint. The mix of half and full pans means you can work comfortably on fine detail and on large washes in the same session, with your most-used colours available in greater volume. Let the pans dry with the lid open before closing the case, and wipe the mixing trays with a damp cloth.

A gift for someone who paints

Art materials are hard to buy for other people — the wrong thing ends up in a drawer. This set is a safe choice for a simple reason: nothing in the palette is niche. It works for a beginner finding their feet and for an experienced painter who wants one portable tin that covers everything.

The turquoise case looks like a considered present rather than something grabbed off a shelf, and it arrives ready to use — all that's needed is a brush, water and paper.

Questions we get asked

Why does the set mix half pans and full pans?

The 26 half pans give you breadth of colour, while the 5 full pans hold the shades most painters use fastest — so you spend less time replacing them. It's a practical layout rather than a compromise.

Is this suitable for a beginner?

Yes, and arguably better than a student set. Clean, strongly pigmented colour removes a lot of early frustration, and 31 colours covers everything a beginner needs without forcing them to mix from three primaries.

What techniques can I use these for?

All of them. The high pigment concentration and easy dilution mean wet-on-wet, glazing, dry brush, lifting and layering all behave as they should.

Can I replace individual colours when they run out?

Yes. ROSA Gallery colours are available as individual pans, so you can top up your favourites rather than buying a whole new set. We stock them separately.

Does it come with a brush?

No brush is included — the case holds paints and mixing trays only. We stock ROSA Stream travel brushes separately, which cap or fold for transport and pair well with this set.
