If your colours keep turning muddy no matter how carefully you mix them, the paint is usually the problem — not your technique. The ROSA Gallery Classic Watercolour Set is where a lot of painters stop fighting their materials. Twenty-one artist-quality full pans in a slim red metal case, built for people who paint seriously, whether that's at a studio desk or on a bench in the rain.
What you get
- 21 full pans, 2.5ml each — full pans, not half pans. Roughly 55% more paint per colour than the 1.6ml half pans found in most travel sets, and a wider surface that takes a big brush without fighting you.
- Red metal case, 22 × 7.5 × 2.5cm — slim enough for a jacket pocket or the side sleeve of a backpack.
- Two mixing areas built into the lid, in different configurations, so you can keep washes and detail mixes apart.
- Finger lock in the base — hold the whole palette in one hand while you paint standing up. This is the detail that makes location work actually possible.
- A free row for 7 extra pans. The case isn't full. You can add your own favourite colours as you develop a personal palette, which very few sets at this price allow.
- Pans lift out for cleaning and rearranging.
The 21 colours
Cadmium Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Light, Carmine, Madder Red, Violet, Olive Green, Green, Emerald Green, Cobalt Blue, Blue, Ultramarine, Indigo, Yellow Ochre, Umber, Burnt Sienna, English Red, Sepia, Neutral Black.
This is a working palette, not a novelty assortment. Warm and cool versions of each primary, a proper earth range for landscape and portrait work, and Neutral Black and Sepia for depth — chosen so you can mix almost anything rather than reach for a twenty-second colour.
Why artists keep coming back to ROSA
ROSA is a leading Ukrainian manufacturer of fine art materials with over 26 years in production, and these watercolours were developed in direct collaboration with working professional artists — colours are tested, adjusted on artists' feedback, and only then put into production.
- Natural gum arabic binder gives even colour flow and proper adhesion to the paper, with none of the plasticky sheen cheap sets leave behind.
- High-quality organic and inorganic pigments, finely ground, for genuine purity and transparency in every colour.
- High pigment concentration — you get the full range from an airy transparent wash to full opacity out of the same pan.
- Tested for lightfastness, colour by colour, so work you make today still looks right in a decade.
- Rewets instantly. Touch a wet brush to a dried pan and the colour is ready — no scrubbing, no waiting. This matters more than anything else when you're working fast.
- A high proportion of single-pigment colours across the ROSA range, which is what keeps mixes clean instead of grey.
Painters who try these tend to describe the same thing: colours that stay vibrant and true to the pan when dry, and granulating shades that behave beautifully on textured paper.
What it's good for
Urban sketching and plein air. The finger lock, the slim profile and the instant rewetting are the three things that decide whether a set gets used outdoors or stays at home. This one gets used.
Studio and botanical work. The earth range and the transparency of the pigments suit careful layered painting as much as loose sketching.
Stepping up from a student set. If you've been working with a hobby-grade tin and hitting a ceiling, this is the honest next step — professional pigment quality without a professional price tag.
Building a custom palette. Those seven empty slots mean the set grows with you.
A gift for someone who paints
Art materials are difficult to buy for other people — get the wrong thing and it sits in a drawer. This set is a safe choice for one reason: the colour selection is universal. There's nothing niche or eccentric in it, so it works for a beginner finding their feet and for an experienced painter who wants a portable palette.
The red case looks like a considered present rather than something grabbed off a shelf, and it arrives ready to use — no extra bits needed beyond a brush, water and paper.

Questions we get asked
Are these full pans or half pans?
Full pans, 2.5ml each. That's noticeably more paint than the 1.6ml half pans used in most travel tins, and the larger surface is easier to load a big brush from.
Is this suitable for a beginner?
Yes — and arguably better than a student set, because clean, strong pigment removes a lot of early frustration. The 21 colours cover everything a beginner needs without overwhelming choice.
Can I add my own colours to the case?
Yes. There's a free row for up to 7 additional full pans, so you can add individual ROSA colours as your palette develops. We stock individual full pans separately.
Does it come with a brush?
No brush is included — the case holds paints and mixing areas only. We stock ROSA Stream travel brushes separately, which fold or cap for transport and pair well with this set.
How should I care for the set?
Let the pans dry fully with the lid open before closing the case, and wipe the mixing areas with a damp cloth. The pans lift out if you want to clean beneath them or rearrange your layout.
