Every one of the 24 colours was selected specifically for the requirements of botanical illustration — transparent glazing colours, a full spectrum of petal tones, clean greens for foliage, and specialist shades that most standard sets don't include. Why Transparency Matters in Botanical Work

Botanical illustration is built on layering — thin transparent glazes that let light travel through the paint and reflect back from the white paper surface. This creates the luminous quality that defines skilled botanical work. Opaque paints block that light. The Botanical palette is assembled almost entirely from transparent and semi-transparent colours precisely for this reason.

Most colours in the set are single-pigment. When you mix two single-pigment colours together, you get a predictable result — essential when you need to recreate an exact shade three layers into a detailed rose study.

A note on Black Grape: this deep wine-purple tone creates rich, transparent darks in the shadow areas of burgundy roses, dark dahlias, and overripe berries. It behaves nothing like black — it glazes cleanly and stays luminous. Standard watercolour sets rarely include it.

The set comes in a compact cardboard box with a plastic blister insert. Each pan sits in its own slot — pans don't touch each other, which means no colour contamination when you reach for a shade. The box closes firmly and keeps paints organised between sessions. Compact enough to sit on a desk or slip into a bag.
